Brunch
Tricolor Salad with Orange and Fennel
We eat a lot of swordfish when we are in Sicily, where my mom is from. She always orders a salad of oranges and fennel or oranges and onions to accompany it. When I cook swordfish anything at home, I always have oranges in the salad, for Mama.
Smoked Salmon with All the Trimmings and Crushed Cherry Tomato Vinaigrette
When you are too exhausted to move, this simple supper stands you back up. Actually, it makes a nice Sunday brunch or late-night snack as well and can easily be adjusted to feed from one to some.
Draggers
I use this recipe (more like a method, really) as a standard party offering, and it’s one of my all-time favorite snackers. I eat mine with flatbread, but it’s good to spread these combinations on sliced seedless cucumbers, too.
Ham and Cheese Mini Frittatas
Quiche—hold the crust and the work!
Honey Mustard Chicken Wings
Unreal! Forget Buffalo wings—not only are these healthier than deep-fried wings and way lower in fat, they simply are the best chicken wings you’ll ever have! They are super, über-snacks that can be a simple supper, with salad or veggies on the side. The only carbs come from natural juice and honey. Unlike the small, snipped wings served in some bars and restaurants, homemade wings are larger and have more meat. Allow three or four for a full dinner portion per person, though my sweetie and I can eat all twelve if we’re watching a double feature that night!
Monday Night Football Food
When you’re watching the big game it’s important to have some smashmouth, tough-guy food like this.
Wafflewiches
The Monte Cristo, a ham, turkey, and cheese sammie on French toast, is a fave of mine. This is guilty pleasure fun-and-tasty twist on the traditional ‘Cristo.
Canadian Benny’s
Recently I went with some close girlfriends to Nova Scotia. There’s a lot more than lox going on up there! At the Normaway Inn on Cape Breton Island our favorite meal was brunch; this is my version of their Eggs Benedict. It’s good for B, L, or D—breakfast, lunch, or dinner!
Boo’s Vanilla Ice Cream with Chunky Peanut Butter Sauce and Gingersnaps
I won’t count this one—it’s a dessert, not a meal—but it has three Boo favorites in one dish.
French Onion Sliced Steak Croissant Sandwich
You won’t find this at the drive-thru! Serve with a mixed green or spinach salad.
Chili–Sweet Potato Hash with Fried Eggs and Fresh Tomato Salsa
Another B, L, or D meal: good for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner.
Croque Monsieur with Greens
Ah, April in Paris! Word of advice: pack a parka! I have been in France twice in April, once to Paris, once to Bordeaux. Twice I froze. Oh, well. The hot ham and cheese tastes better then.
Eggs-traordinary Stuffed Toasty Baskets with Lemony Greens
This is a B-L-D meal: good for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner.
Strawberries and Syrup
This preparation takes fresh strawberries to another level. Paired with whipped or sweet cream, these berries are pure indulgence. They can be served over pancakes, waffles, or French toast for brunch, spooned over pound cake, or paired with biscuits for shortcake. They can even make a relatively healthy dessert spooned over nonfat Greek yogurt with a grating of fresh cinnamon or nutmeg to liven things up.
